I think I'm still afraid of the dark

Well this is embarrassing to admit. It really hit me last night when I got up to fill my glass of water and did a flying leap onto my bed and spilled water all over myself because you know, there might be something under there! Yeah, Ginny. There's some dust bunnies, cat toys and hula hoops under there. And how old are you?

I've gathered the evidence here for you so you can point and laugh at me. Go on, I'm giving you permission.

  • I have to close my closet door before I go to bed.
  • When I lived at home in my early 20s we had a really creepy cellar so I made sure to lock the cellar door every night.
  • When camping I sprint to the bathroom like I'm in a horror movie because it's really dark and I'm in the woods. I'm not afraid of wild animals, I'm afraid of murderous psychopaths.
  • I will often leap on to me bed if I have gotten up in the middle of the night.

My fear was much worse when I was a kid. I would actually check in my closet and under my bed before I went to bed.

I blame vivid dreams and nightmares for this phobia. I have to blame something right?

Let's also blame that movie Darkness Falls. It's like someone made that movie just to scare the shit out of me.

  1. I'm not afraid of the dark but if I hear an inexplicable noise when I'm lying in bed I will do a mental inventory of what large, heavy objects are close at hand so I can use them to defend myself. When I was at home alone at Christmas I slept with a carving knife on the floor next to my bed, just in case.

Fear of the dark, no. Fear of psychopaths, yes.

  2. I think my love of horror movies and scary things prevents me from being scared of the dark. Let me rephrase that: I am scared of the dark, but I love being scared, so it's okay. (I am more messed up than I thought I was)

  3. Beware of the movie Cat's Eye by Stephen King. You will never leave your closet open again.

  5. When I was little, I would pee in a cup beside my bed and wake up early to flush it down the toilet because I WOULD NOT go to the bathroom in the middle of the night because of all the scary things that I just knew, without a doubt, would eat me if I ventured to the toilet.

  6. Every door in my house has to be shut before I can go to sleep too.

  7. I'm also sort of afraid of the dark.. especially when my husband isn't home, then it also feels creepy going down in the basement. I don't lock stuff though, other than the front door.
