23 days until the Hunger Games movie and thoughts on Mockingjay Katniss

The Hunger Games opens in theaters in 23 days! Not that I'm counting or anything....

I'd like to take a moment to talk about Katniss in Mockingjay. So if you haven't read book 3 yet you might want to skip this. Nothing super spoilerific but still, just a warning.

I am a Katniss fan. There are some people that are not. Some think she's cold and others like her character up until Mockingjay. They don't like weak Katniss that hides in the closet. But you know what? She's a teenager who's been through a lot of shit. She was in the Hunger Games not once but twice, her home was blown to pieces, the guy that she loves (but won't admit it yet) was kidnapped and is being tortured and the people that she thought she could trust were using her to further their own agenda and lied to her about it. Not to mention that she's now expected to be the face of a revolution. I think she has every right to have a little break down. Suzanne Collins knew what she was doing. Hard, cold, strong Katniss is still a teenager, she's still human, she is not perfect. In the end she does what she has to do to survive and that is the Katniss we know and love.

  1. Wait, there are people out there that don't like her at the end? WHAT? Does not compute.

I love Katniss and I can't wait for this movie!

  5. I just finished the last book yesterday!

I absolutely loved the series and cant wait for the movie to come out but the last book depressed me. Its amazing how she really makes you connect with Katniss and (i don't want to give anything away) the ending left me feeling sad. At the same time it gives the book more of a real life feeling, in reality not everything turns out in your favor. The aftermath of everything she goes through and the flash backs and everything oooohh my god if i keep typing im going to go on a rant and end up giving something away.

Aaahhh! I can't wait to see how it turns out on the big screen, i hope they continue to make the rest of the books into movies.

But to answer your question i like Katniss. I think people tend to forget her age, normal children don't have to go through all the horror and loss she experiences.

    1. The ending was a bit sad in some respects but I was happy that Katniss and Peeta ended up together.

I'm so excited to see the movie. I can't handle the waiting!

  10. I think where this becomes a problem is that she's older in the movies, so I might find it harder to forgive her character flaws in the films on the basis that "she's still a child"... But that's amalgamating the two mediums of storytelling and I guess the books should stand on their own merit.

  11. I love the shit out of Katniss through all three books. My Mockingjay grievance isn't really with Katniss, so much as Suzanne Collins, because she spends WAY too much time on the love triangle shit in that book, and you know my feelings on YA love triangles. So I suppose you could say this means I wish Katniss would worry less about her romantic dilemma in the third book, but for me that's more of a Suzanne Collins issue than a Katniss issue. It boggles my mind that anyone could see her as "weak" in any part of this series. DID YOU READ ALL THE SHIT THAT SHE WENT THROUGH? I actually love the fact that the ending acknowledges that she and Peeta will always be a little bit broken. It's sad, yes, but anything else would be absurd, after all that they go through in this series.

  12. I'm replying to this super late because I am late to the Hunger Games party.. but I did arrive!

I love Katniss to death. She's totally not perfect, but you're right. She went through WAY more than she was emotionally capable of handling and yet she persevered. Of course she could break down every once in awhile.

I am a fan of Mockingjay. I think it was a bit rushed at the end (I am a sappy idiot who would have liked a few more cute we're-gonna-be-ok scenes with her and Peeta), but I am happy overall with its conclusion.

And I liked the movie, despite some things being omitted. I would have watched a 4 hours movie if they'd wanted to include everything, but I'm guessing the general movie-going public wouldn't have appreciated that so I understand.

    Ok gushing over. So sorry.
