Bar trivia is serious guys

Every Wednesday I go to a bar in Somerville to play trivia. Derek and I don't take it too seriously. We never give up though even when we're doing horribly. The problem is we play with very serious teams. Teams that show up every week with six people and probably a pencil sharpener just in case. They are in it to win it. We're more in it to drink beer and eat food. We're happy if we don't come in last place.

You can tell how serious some of the teams are when it comes time to answer the bonus question. One team member goes up by the host and the first person to write down and show the correct answer to the host wins the bonus. People will shove you out of the way before the question is even asked. I just assume I'm going to get it wrong so I'm not going to fight my way to the front.

There's this one woman who gets really mad if someone else gets the bonus. She has her spot where she always stands and she's always wearing a sweater with a collared shirt under it even if it's 90 degrees out. Pencil poised and ready to stab that paper as soon as the host says the bonus. She threw me off this week by foregoing the sweater and just wearing a collard shirt.

We didn't do so well this week but that's because neither of us is a Jude Law expert. Whoever comes up with the questions is a big fan.

After trivia we unwind at a bar down the street that's sort of hidden behind a diner. A prime people watching spot and sometimes you might catch a bad band or horrible but entertaining karaoke. Thursday morning I drive home to get ready for work and wish it was Friday. Repeat the following week.

  1. I've never taken part in a pub quiz but there is that atmosphere to them. They can get fiercely competitive and sometimes the questions are the kind of stuff I really don't expect drunk people to know, but they do. It's kind of odd to think that these people know more than me.

  2. Oh man, that sounds like a great quiz to be at! I'm actually a Quiz Host at my local pub and I am the one who has all the power... mwah ha ha! Although at the moment my pub only has 20 people rocking up to it so you'd have much better chances at my pub of winning a goon bag (cask of wine)...

  3. We just started a trivia night at my bar a couple of months ago. People do get really serious about it. I don't understand it. It's not like they're on Jeaopardy or anything.

  4. I love bar trivia!! But I'm terrible at it. However, I am convincing. Last time I played I managed to convince my five teammates that an answer was whooping cough when it was clearly autism. Oops! :)

  6. We do bar trivia on Tuesday nights. The teams that come are often HUGE with like 8 or more people which is just crazy to me. Luckily there isnt any bonus rounds where only one team could win because that would get ugly, Im sure.

    1. They limit it to 6 per time which is nice. 8 is not really fair.
